Stepping Back In Time

A return to the past…and to Goodwood Revival!

By Verity Craig

The Goodwood estate in West Sussex, looked more glorious than ever during this years’ Revival weekend.

The circuit was established by Freddie March (later 9th Duke of Richmond), himself a Brooklands winner, and was revived by his grandson Charles, Earl of March, in 1998.

The Revival event itself is a magical step back in time celebrating the romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be in Goodwood’s heyday.

From the smell and loud roars of the classic cars from yesteryear to the chic and fun costumes of the visitors in their vintage attire, the place was buzzing in the sunshine over the 3 days of fun.

After a year away due to the pandemic, spectators came out in their droves to admire the racing of the cars from the past on the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit while equally enjoying the themed village.

For some, the day began in either Betty’s vintage hair salon (themed of course) or with the Goodwood Barber. Visitors really did make an extra effort with their themed styling this year! From 40s war-time period costumes to 50s rockabilly and even the odd 60s Twiggy-esque; people-watchers must have been in their element!

But of course, the real stars of the weekend were the cars.

Three parades took place on the Friday celebrating Hot Rods, Sir Stirling Moss and British Racing Motors. This year, the Revival is hosting one of the largest ever gatherings of Hot Rods in Europe, as well as paying tribute to ‘Mr Goodwood’ himself, Sir Stirling Moss, who passed away last year. British Racing Motors are celebrating 70 years since they first appeared on a Grand Prix grid with an assembly of F1, F2 and Can-Am cars.

The Friday evening saw the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy. Newly-renamed from the Kinrara Trophy and contested by Jaguar E-types, Ferrari 250s, Aston Martin DB4 GTs and AC Cobras, the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy saw Jenson Button (pictured) make his historic racing debut. A fitting and emotional race and parade!

As well as the cars, there was entertainment in the form of professional dancers doing the jive and such while the big band played. And if that wasn’t enough, there was also the popular vintage funfair complete with a helter-skelter.

Over on the Revive and Thrive Stage in the new ‘Make-Do and Mend’ area, Richard Hammond (pictured) discussed his latest venture, the launch of a new restoration workshop ‘The Smallest Cog’ with father and son partners Neil and Anthony Greenhouse.

Meanwhile, in the Over the Road area of the event visitors enjoyed films including AnnieThe Secret Garden and Grease at the Revival Cinema presented by Sky Cinema, while the Bonhams Auction took place on the Saturday afternoon.

The Duke of Richmond also unveiled the dates of the Eroica Britannia festival (the iconic vintage cycling festival) which will take place on Saturday 6th to Sunday 7th August this year, as he welcomed Eroica regulars to the Revival.

The era that visitors are asked to style themselves upon is 40s, 50s and 60s, in-keeping with the stunning cars on display and racing.

6 Essential Rules For Skincare In Your 30s…whether you’re male or female!

By the time you reach your 30s, aging has begun to affect the skin. Wearing sunscreen, using a quality exfoliant, eating a good diet, and taking other vital steps becomes critical. Carlton Ryan explains.

Ageing affects everything. And when you reach your 30s, your body is no longer quite at its 100% best. Small signs of aging will begin to appear, and your skin is no exception to this rule.

Your skin of course, plays a huge role in how good you look. Since the skin is the largest organ in the body, it also plays a more significant role in health than you might think. If you want to counteract the effects of aging on your skin, there are a few things you can add to you daily routine of skincare and inner health.

Here are six essential rules for taking care of your skin in your 30s:

1. Have a skincare routine

If you are like many people, there is a good chance you didn’t pay attention to your skin at all in your 20s. Now that lines, wrinkles, and other ageing signs are making their appearance known, you may understand why skincare matters. While it’s best to start a good skincare routine as early as possible, there’s no point in ‘crying over spilled milk.’ Now is the time to start counteracting the effects of ageing on your skin and prevent more damage.

2. Use a good exfoliant

A high-quality exfoliant becomes important as you enter your 30s. As you get older, your rate of skin cell turnover slows down. This contributes to your skin appearing tired and dull. Exfoliants remove the top layer of dead skin, prompting your body to produce new skin cells, which brings that skin turnover rate back up. It is recommended we use them weekly. Exfoliants also give a good instant fresh look and feel.

3. Use a quality moisturiser

By the time you are in your 30s, the oily skin and acne that may have plagued you before may have now left, but with your 30s has brought another problem; the likely problem instead is now dry skin. Dry skin looks and feels bad, besides speeding up aging. You need to use a good moisturiser every day. Moisturisers help seal moisture into the skin and also act as a protector against the outdoor (wind, cold and sun) elements and indoor (central heating and air con) elements.

4. Wear sunscreen

The intense ultraviolet rays of the sun are not friendly to your skin. First, they contribute a lot to problems of ageing like wrinkles and sunspots. Second, and more importantly, as we all should know nowadays, sunlight can cause skin cancer. Unblocked UV light massively increases your risk of developing skin cancer. If you haven’t been protecting yourself with sunscreen during your 20s, it’s doubly important you start now. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher each time you are out in the sun for more than a few minutes, and yes that even applies to winter sun.

5. Use a good cleanser

By the time you are in your 30s, the oily and acne-plagued skin that once afflicted you when you were younger is likely gone. That change means you can opt for a gentler, less abrasive cleanser. At any age, a quality cleanser is needed to wash your face free of oil and dirt, which allows your pores to avoid getting clogged. If you don’t like to wash with a cleanser, however, there are also available some excellent quality cream cleansers. There’s also always free advice at beauty counters in stores on which cleanser will likely suit your skin type!

If you are looking for a natural alternative though, there are some easy recipes you can find online with ingredients including honey, milk and oatmeal; items that most of us have in our kitchen!

6. Eat a good diet

Your 30s are when you could start to really suffer ill effects if you don’t eat properly and work out regularly. And your skin can only be healthy if you supply it with nutritious food. Follow the general precepts of healthy eating; prioritise eating vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and lean proteins. Minimise consumption of sweet and processed foods, both of which speed up skin ageing. Drink plenty of water to help your skin stay moisturised and rid toxins.

Eating a good diet is also key to controlling your weight. Aside from other terrible effects, being overweight stretches and damages your skin.

Whether you thrive in maturing or not, your 30s are when ageing starts to truly hit your skin. While there is nothing you can do to stop this inevitable process, you certainly can do all you can to ensure your skin ages gracefully. Adopting the proper skincare routine for your 30s is an essential step to take.

A Grand Lady of London

Synonymous with being the place to go for breakfast, afternoon tea or dinner and drinks, The Wolseley has a reputation of classical elegance that has lasted through the ages since it first opened in 2003. But what lays behind the restaurants’ beautiful façade, is a motoring and financial history that many entering The Wolseley today, may be unaware.

Our editor Verity Craig tells the story behind one of her personal favourite haunts in London

Step inside The Wolseley, and what will always strike you, is it’s grandeur, height and bustle.

Since opening as a restaurant in 2003 by restauranteurs Chris Corbin and Jeremy King, this marbled interior, monochrome classical venue set in the heart of Piccadilly has captured the hearts of the elite crowds, the media world, the tourists and even Royalty.

“English architect, William Curtis Green, created ‘160 Piccadilly’ when commissioned by Wolseley Motors Limited, hence the buildings height,”

Known as London’s first grand café, The Wolseley’s menu of popular European dishes have remained ever popular; from the eggs Benedict for breakfast to the oysters or chateaubriand for lunch or dinner, and of course their famous afternoon tea.

But it wasn’t always the epitome of glamour and style. It was in 1921 that English architect, William Curtis Green, created ‘160 Piccadilly’ when commissioned by Wolseley Motors Limited, hence the buildings height. He clearly took on an artistic viewpoint for the new car showroom, while also working around the practicalities of what it would ultimately be used for; cars.

Sadly, the story for Wolseley Motors was not as successful as the building would be in its future, and so Wolseley Motors closed a few years later in 1926.

However, the tale of this venue didn’t end there for its architect. In 1927 William Curtis Green was once again commissioned to work on the building, but this time by its new purchasers, Barclays Bank, who had appointed him to make necessary big alterations for cashiers points and offices while making sure it was all still in keeping with the buildings elegant image. The managers’ offices that he placed either side of the grand entrance, are still there today now as the cocktail bar on the right and the tea salon on the left.

It was then in 2003, upon Barclays Bank closing and selling to Chris Corbin and Jeremy King that this building really started to make history; in its new guise as a restaurant. When the doors flung open, guests flooded to get their booked tables… and so it has continued.

Rather gracefully, and as a nod to the architect who spent much of his career working tirelessly on this iconic London building, the current owners have kept much of the original architecture. The stunning monochrome marbled floor, for example, remains with the beautiful domed ceiling above, as do many smaller aspects that one can spy throughout while sipping on Champagne or enjoying a hearty meal at this charming ‘grand cafe.’

Get Up and Go!

Enhance your strength training with compound exercises, says Alexander Roberts

Compound exercises involve moving two or more joints at the same time, which is different from isolation exercises that focus on one particular muscle group and a single joint. For example, a squat is a type of compound exercise, while a leg extension is a type of isolation exercise. While both forms have their own advantages, compound exercises are more time-efficient, as they work more muscle groups all at once.

Training sessions that involve more compound exercises can save you time since you get a better workout compared to just doing isolation exercises. By using multiple muscles at the same time, you can enhance your functional fitness levels, as they work on whole-body coordination and help your muscles get used to working in an integrated manner. Using compound movements like squats or deadlifts also burn more calories than exercises that only activate single muscles, such as bicep curls.

You may realise by now why it’s good to incorporate compound exercises into your fitness routine. Here are 5 that you may like to include specifically.

1. Squats

Some trainers feel that squats are the ultimate exercise because they activate so many muscle groups in the lower body. Squats involve the movement of multiple joints and work on the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves. But even though squats are highly effective, you should also incorporate other exercises like lunges, step-ups, and leg presses to help strengthen your quadricep muscles and to balance out the muscles in your lower body.

2. Lunges

Lunges and lunge variations can help you work on many different muscles in your lower body like your hamstrings and quads. They are better at building stronger quads rather than hamstrings, although you will work both these muscles in a lunge.

By tilting your upper body slightly forwards when lunging, you can activate your hamstrings more. Walking lunges can also increase activation of the hamstrings and can burn extra calories too. Once you’ve mastered the standard lunge technique, you can progress to lunge variations that work the hamstrings and quads in different ways.

3. Deadlifts

To achieve maximum muscle group training and strength building, add deadlifts that work your lower and upper body muscles simultaneously. Deadlifts also help your body produce fat-burning hormones like growth hormone and testosterone that stimulate the growth of muscles and enhance fat burning. Because deadlifts work on so many muscle groups, they are an excellent way to burn calories and outperform most strength training exercises – particularly if you apply extra resistance. However, you should be careful if you have a history of back issues and perhaps opt for easier variations of deadlifts like the sumo deadlift.

4. Push-ups

Push-ups allow you to train your upper body muscles without having to rely on gym equipment though you could use a mat for added comfort. Push-ups work your chest, triceps, and arm muscles, and you can focus more on your triceps if you shift your weight around by placing your hands closer together. This variation makes push-ups more challenging. Conversely, the wider you place your hands apart, the more you activate the pectoral muscles in your chest.

5. Parallel Dips

While it can be challenging for beginners, parallel dips are a great way to build muscle mass in your upper body by working out your triceps, chest muscles, and core. You can vary parallel dips to focus more on different muscle groups like the chest or triceps. Some people even do them with weighted chains to add extra resistance to build more muscle mass. However, be mindful that dips are not suitable for people with shoulder issues.

Revival Style Adviser Appointed for Goodwood 2021

Before ‘sustainable fashion’ was a thing, or before most of us tried to do our bit towards it, one fashion stylist was pioneering in the eco fashion movement, since 2003.

Bay Garnett, stylist, editor, author and undisputed Queen of Thrift, is the creative genius behind some of 21st Century’s most iconic fashion spreads. Pioneering the use of thrifted pieces in the world of high fashion, Bay has elevated second-hand shopping, transforming the way we buy clothes forever. Ever since her first ground-breaking shoot for British Vogue (in 2003), in which Kate Moss appeared in only second-hand clothing, Bay has inspired a love for vintage pieces and sustainable fashion, something she explores in her podcast series, This Old Thing? and in her role as Oxfam’s Senior Fashion Adviser.

Held in the beautiful West Sussex countryside every September, the Goodwood Revival is vintage fashion’s best kept secret: an immersive experience of vintage living, honouring the glory days of motor racing at Goodwood between 1948 and 1966. The carefully restored classic cars and the beautifully preserved vintage clothes at the heart of the event represent the antithesis of today’s throwaway culture, recalling a time when people cherished their belongings, repairing, and repurposing them for a lifetime of use. Revival is by its very nature a celebration of exceptional craftsmanship, style and sustainability.

“We all know that fashion has a huge impact on our planet and so this year we wanted to make sure that we used our incredible event to highlight solutions to this problem,”

Founder of Goodwood Revival, the Duke of richmond

Just as important as the priceless historic racing cars that roar in fierce battle on the track are the fashion stories that are retold. Goodwood is keen to encourage that everyone attending the event embraces the fashions of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s in a stylish, sustainable way. Whether it’s something beautiful passed down through the generations, or the timeless spoils of a thrift mission brought back to life with a clever stitch or two, Revival is all about celebrating – and encouraging – circular rather than fast fashion.

With a shared passion for reviving vintage treasures, Goodwood and Bay are partnering for the 2021 Revival, encouraging all visitors to embrace sustainable fashion and come to the event with their own second-hand stories on show. Over the summer, Bay will be working closely with Goodwood to answer styling questions and offer tips on how guests can put together a Revival outfit. Bay will be in attendance at the event in her role as Revival Style Adviser and will be on-hand to inspire and empower visitors, making sure everyone feels part of the vintage family.

“Goodwood is keen to encourage that everyone attending the event embraces the fashions of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s in a stylish, sustainable way.”

Bay is very much looking forward to bringing her wisdom to the Revival audience: “Goodwood Revival really brings to life the idea that second-hand can be beautiful and glamorous – and that fashion passed from generation to generation is something that should be celebrated. I’m hugely excited to be attending in my new role as Revival Style Adviser and can’t wait to discover the stories and inspiration behind people’s outfits.”

The Duke of Richmond, founder of Goodwood Revival, said: “We all know that fashion has a huge impact on our planet and so this year we wanted to make sure that we used our incredible event to highlight solutions to this problem. We want to reconnect with the best of the past and as an antidote to the throw away culture, share how special pieces can be treasured, valued and passed down through generations.”

This years Goodwood Revival, takes place 17th-19th September.
