Selfridges Christmas Market Returns!

Complimentary tickets are now available for the Christmas destination
as it returns for a second year, even bigger than before

Selfridges Christmas Market on the Mews opened its doors on Friday 5th November, brimming with festive cheer and fun for the whole family to enjoy.

The Selfridges spirit brings with it (at the unique W1 destination behind the Oxford Street store,) a curation of gifting, dining and entertainment, making the Mews a place for friends to socialise and celebrate together this Christmas.

Bigger and brighter than before, with Edwards Mews taken over by some of London’s best food and drink vendors, magical market stalls and unexpected experiences will adorn the street, and there will even be the opportunity to meet Santa and friends. A curation of food and drink trucks, three bars, gifting stalls and fairground rides, including a Helter Skelter, will line Edwards Mews alongside a spectacular giant Christmas Tree twinkling with fairy lights.

At the entrance to the Selfridges store on the mews, customers will be able to browse gifts, advent calendars and stocking fillers as well as visit a new Christmas Concierge; a service for inspiring solutions for every festive need – from Christmas hampers and present advice to ordering sustainably grown Christmas trees and wreaths or discovering the gift of unique-to-Selfridges experiences.

The impressive line-up of food traders has once again been curated in partnership with food market pioneer and founder of Street Feast, Dominic Cools-Lartigue. It includes everything from savoury and sweet waffles from Utter Waffle, gourmet burgers and chips by The Tramshed Project, pie and mash from My Pie and Filipino street food from Bong Bongs to doughnuts by Treats Club and cookies and nitrogen ice cream by Chin Chin. Three on site bars are offering mulled wine, craft beer, cocktails and hot chocolate.

The Christmas Market on the Mews is open daily from 5th November to 24th December: Monday to Friday 4 – 9pm
Saturday and Sunday 12 – 9pm
Entry is via Duke Street. Tickets (free of charge) are available at:

Drops of Youth

Regaining the lost years of our youth through our beauty regime, has long been a source of interest for women. And with so many products claiming to do just that, it can be quite a minefield of which ones to try.

So with that in mind, we’ve spent the last three months in our office busy trying some of the most popular anti-wrinkle creams available so that we can give you results on our Top 5.

  1. Perricone MD

Claim: A face finishing moisturiser tint that infuses the skin with essential hydration to help minimise the look of lines and wrinkles, while bringing out its natural slight tan from your own pigmentation.

It’s also enriched with antioxidants for a smoother appearance and a dewy glow.

It’s an oil-free moisturiser that delivers just a hint of tint and with a mineral-based SPF 30.

Result: This is our favourite due largely to it’s thick texture as a moisturiser, while protecting you from harmful UV rays with an SPF30. It actually gives you an instant ‘glow’ too, and does appear to have removed the most fine lines when compared to all the other creams we tried.

£59, perriconemd.co.uk

2. Espa Optimal Skin Pro-Moisturiser

Claim: Discover the route to radiance with ESPA Optimal Collection. Enjoy this lightweight moisturiser, rich in skin-enhancing nutrients that will balance the complexion and deliver long-lasting hydration. South African Resurrection Plant revives dehydrated skin for a youthful glow, Navarra Asparagus Extract targets signs of premature ageing, while Yeast Bioferment revitalises, for visibly radiant, beautiful skin.

Result: We found that this nutrient rich cream, hydrated our skin immediately. Espa has done it again! Perfect for dry or combination skin, and lines did appear to be less.

£50, espaskincare.com

3. L’Oreal Revitalift

Claim: The Revitalift Day Cream with SPF30 is an advanced pro-retinol cream. It’s main ingredient is a powerful dermatologist-inspired anti-wrinkle one, which helps to smooth the skin’s surface.
Fibrelastyl is a forming complex, which helps to reinforce skin elasticity for extra-firm skin.

Result: We found this modestly priced cream to be an excellent all-round moisturiser. Lines appeared slightly less, but the main bonus is it’s gentle moisturising dewy feel on the skin while protecting it with an SPF30.

£12.99, boots.com

4.Clarins Extra Firming Energy

Claim: The glow plus complex in this cream is a concentrate of energising fruit extracts and 4 next-generation pearlescent pigments (green, blue, red, gold) that capture the natural light and reflect it on the skin.

It revitalises the skin, reducing dullness, wrinkles, and other signs of fatigue. ‘Desert Date’ reduces dark spots too. Goji extract provides energy. Acerola extract aids skin oxygenation. An instant enhancing effect on all skin tones.

Result: Clarins has long been a beauty favourite and staple for many, and this new cream from the ‘Energy Range’ is no exception. Not only does it smell delicious and glide on beautifully, but there is definitely an ‘instant’ result of a glow, while lines do appear less (after a few days.)

£59, clarins.co.uk

5. Chanel Le lift

Claim: For the first time, CHANEL has created a new smoothing and firming cream that is highly concentrated in naturally occurring ingredients.
In fact, Le Lift Crème is formulated using 89% naturally occurring ingredients, including a new star ingredient of botanical alfalfa concentrate, which has been shown to be as efficient as retinol but gentle on the skin.

Result: This light cream dissolves into the skin quickly leaving it smooth. Especially great for thirsty skin! And yes, the appearance of lines do appear less in a short period. This is a great luxury moisturiser.

The Magical Land of Oz

With the rumour circulating that Australia will open it’s borders by December, what better time to visit this missed paradise down under?

While parts of Australia are heavily urbanized, there are also large swaths of land in the country featuring dozens of must-see attractions.

Travel expert, Paul Sullivan, highlights the top 5 destinations he recommends we should visit in Oz…but make sure you book up quick. It’s set to be in great demand.

Did you know that the land down under is the world’s smallest continent? That’s not to mean it lacks attractions to explore though; on the contrary. There’s so much to see in Australia, from the coastal cities to the outback parks. One could spend a whole day soaking in the sun on a stunning beach on an island, do a bit of exploring of nature in the desert and then spend the entire evening nightclubbing in the bustling city centre afterwards; there’s something for everyone.

A red kangaroo standing in grasslands in the Flinders Ranges National Park in the Australian Outback

The sights aren’t the only reason to travel to Australia. Sometimes it’s the people that make the trip, and Australians are no exception; they are some of the friendliest. But with so much to see and do, make sure you see the main sights.

Here are the top five attractions to see in Australia.

1. Sydney Opera House

When people think of Sydney, this is likely the first place that comes to mind. This UNESCO World Heritage site is supposedly one of the most-photographed buildings in the entire world. And you don’t have to be an architect to understand how beautiful the stunning structure’s white roof is, resembling a series of shells.

The Sydney Opera House is located near the equally admired Sydney Harbour Bridge in New South Wales, specifically on Bennelong Point. Bennelong Point was named after Bennelong, an aboriginal man who lived on the site and acted as one of two liaisons between the locals and British settlers. After a resident conductor from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra called attention to the need for a symphony/opera house in Sydney, New South Wales approved a construction plan.

Danish architect Jorn Utzon won an international competition for the building’s design in 1957, but the project kept encountering construction problems because of its radically innovative design. Finally, in 1973, The Sydney Opera House had been completed. Upon it’s unveiling, Queen Elizabeth II commented, “The human spirit must sometimes take wings or sails, and create something that is not just utilitarian or commonplace.”

2. Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

The Great Barrier Reef is 2,300 kilometres long, making it the most extensive coral reef system in existence. The best part about visiting this marvel is it’s open for swimming, diving, snorkelling, and sailing. Tourists can not only see this UNESCO World Heritage Site, but they can interact with it and fully experience it underwater.

The Great Barrier Reef’s wonder is difficult to comprehend, considering it is the most massive single structure built by living things. It is seen from outer space. It’s so large, it could span over 70 million football fields. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is responsible for taking care of the area. UNESCO has even described the reef as one of “outstanding universal value,” which means that its disappearance would harm global heritage.

Its beauty lies in more than just its looks. The reef is home to one of the most complex ecosystems, encompassing 120-year-old giant clams, hundreds of species of birds and echinoderms, hundreds of hard and soft corals species, and thousands of species of crustaceans and mollusks. There are tons of fish, whales, dolphins, and turtles as well, among others.

3. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Over 250,000 people visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park every year to behold the wonders of the Uluru rock formation and Kata Tjuta rock domes. These formations on a sand plain are so unique that the national park was included in the World Heritage List in 1987 for their ‘outstanding universal natural values.’ And in 1995, the park was being recognised for its exceptional universal cultural values too. In 2007, it was included in the National Heritage List, proving its significance to Australian culture. Basically, when in Oz you must visit this national park.

The Uluru is a monolith measuring 9.4 kilometres in circumference and standing 348 meters above the sandplain; even taller than some famous skyscrapers such as New York’s Chrysler Building. The Kata Tjuta, on the other hand, is 546 meters above the sand plain. The national park’s traditional owners are the Anangu, who lease the land to the Australian government and work with them to manage it.

Aboriginal people have been living in Central Australia for over 30,000 years, but the first non-Aboriginal people to notice Uluru and Kata Tjuta were explorers in 1872. Though the park looks hot and dry, it can also get quite chilly in the winter, and rain isn’t uncommon.

4. Bondi Beach

For a fun time with the family, tourists always choose to visit one of the most famous beaches in the world, Bondi Beach. It’s known for its fine sand and active waves, which are perfect for sunbathing and surfing. Bondi Beach is a beautiful tourist attraction for any season, and people who aren’t fond of lounging by the beach all day or swimming, can also enjoy it for walking, playing golf, and even whale-watching.

Travelling to Bondi Beach isn’t too tricky as it’s accessible by bus and train, and of course car. After building sandcastles all day or getting a tan, there’s many restaurants, cafes, and bars by the beach to visit including the locally sourced fish and chips. There are also various shops in the area if you need a new swimsuit or a new pair of shades!

A trip to Bondi Beach can be sporty too. There are several accredited surf schools situated by the beach, allowing newbies to practice surfing under professionals’ supervision.

5. The Blue Mountains

The Greater Blue Mountains Area is the last World Heritage Site on this list, considered one of Australia’s World Heritage properties in 2000. There are tonnes of spots to see, ranging from waterfalls to rock formations and some of the worlds’ most stunning sunsets. There are around 140 kilometres of walking tracks to pass through and even underground caves to tour.

The area is just around two hours away from Sydney by car, but tourists can make their way to the Blue Mountains by train or coach as well. People can choose to complete the walking tracks themselves, but it is recommended, to be safer, do them with a tour group, especially if it’s a first trip to The Blue Mountains.

Perhaps the most popular site in The Blue Mountains is the Three Sisters, natural pillars associated with an Aboriginal legend.

One thing to be guaranteed, is that you when visiting this huge area of natural beauty, you will see astounding sights, views and sunsets.

The birthplace of Burberry, Fortnum & Mason and the Burlington Arcade to name a few, Britain is home to some of the world’s best and most famous luxury brands. A country celebrated for its elegant and meticulous craftsmanship, this is no different when it comes to the world of fine jewellery.

With jewellery districts scattered around the country such as London’s Hatton Gardens and Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, there is a strong and rich history of goldsmithing and diamond trading throughout the UK.

So, in case you are looking to purchase a piece of luxury jewellery that is British-born through and through, we list 5 internationally sought-after brands whose roots are UK based.

The exclusive UK carrier of the rare Ashoka diamond cut, Boodles remains to this day an independent, family-run company that continues to honour British values of integrity, trust, and inclusivity.

London designer Glenn Spiro (right) opened his first workshop at the age of 21. Fresh out of school, the contemporary designer went straight to train as a Master Jeweller at the English Art Works, where he became acclaimed for his unique and unconventional manipulation of materials.

After many years of creating famous works of wearable art for famous jewellery houses and gaining a large celebrity following in Los Angeles, he moved his eponymous brand to Mayfair, opening an exclusive salon where he hosts private clients for viewings of his most recent works. Fantasy inspired and breaking creative boundaries, each of his pieces is architecturally complex. Ocean Delights

As a longstanding place admired in the foodie world, Rick Stein’s famous Seafood Restaurant in Padstow makes the perfect treat for staycationers in the UK.

Verity Craig visits the admired seafood eatery

I’m an avid viewer of Rick Stein cooking away at his seafood delights on television, so I have longed to visit his highly acclaimed The Seafood Restaurant in Cornwall. This was going to be an exciting experience for me. On this occasion, I was visiting with my family for my birthday.

Upon our arrival at lunchtime, there was already a flurry of well-dressed people excitedly queueing to reach the reservation desk. Not a common sight for reservations in a high-end restaurant. But to be honest, it simply added to the excitement of entering, and the queue went swiftly.

Inside, the décor designed by Jill Stein, was light, airy and modern with the most interesting art adorning the walls (which looks as though you can also purchase it, just like the beautiful Jill Stein home range (created alongside her daughter-in-law Kate Stein) including their deliciously smelling candles, plush cushions or Rick’s cook books.)

Once settled at our table overlooking the bustling restaurant, the friendly waiting staff and sommelier explained the menus to us. The atmosphere is relaxed, yet it has that air of something special about it; a bit like it’s owner-chef!

Having opened in 1975 by Rick and his ex-wife Jill, what became their flagship restaurant, is famous for serving its exquisite classical English local seafood dishes. That’s not to say they have not moved the menu’s style of food on with the times; from the sashimi (of scallop, sea bass, tuna and loch Duart salmon) to the hot shellfish with parsley, chilli, garlic and lemon juice. The dishes are interesting but classical enough to be inviting for most seafood lovers.

Copyright David Griffen photography

What I also enjoyed about the atmosphere was that having a child with us (over three year olds are welcome), we were not made to feel out of place (albeit it was daytime.) There was a mixture of families, couples and groups.

My seven-year-old daughter is a big seafood fan…but also, the biggest Rick Stein fan. So, upon her disappointment of him not being there on the day, the waiter asked if she had a question about him. She promptly answered, “I have two if that’s ok….is he kind? And what is his favourite dish on the menu?” Fortunately, it was a ‘yes, very’ to the first question. And interestingly, according to his staff, Rick’s most favoured dish on his menu is the Lemon Sole Veronique!

Pictured above: Jack, Jill, Charlie, Rick and Ed SteinCopyright Rickstein.com

“With the successful duo’s three sons (pictured above with Jill and Rick) running all aspects of the group of restaurants, it really is a Stein family empire,”

We all enjoyed a mixture of Cornish dressed crab, deep fried prawns in coconut, to the lobster thermidor…meanwhile my youngest daughter ate from the fun children’s menu which included such delights as moules mariniere and fish and chips. But what stole the show was the jelly and ice cream; little fish shaped orange jellies!

Set on the north coast of Cornwall, many refer to the fishing town now as ‘Padstein,’ since Rick and Jill own 4 restaurants in the beautiful port, where we were informed by our waiter Mr Stein swims every morning; what a lovely life he must have in his adopted home of 40-plus years.

Copyright Chetwode Ram Associates LTD.

In summer months, be warned that the quaint fishing town does become busy with an influx of tourists. So it is advised to visit off-season to avoid the crowds and lack of parking (or park away and walk in to the town.)

So, if you fancy a trip to one of the most beautiful parts of England, do make sure you combine it with a visit to one of the most exquisite restaurants in England too and visit The Seafood Restaurant at Padstow.
