Re-charge and Experience

One of Hawaii’s most sought-after destinations unveils a new experience for its guests…and you could be amongst Hollywood company

Nestled along the dramatic Kohala Coast and in the piko, or centre, of five great mountains, Mauna Lani is a sacred oasis where generations of families and friends have made memories together on soulful lands once cherished by the greatest of Hawaiian royalty.

This stunning hotel has now unveiled an epic experience adding to their enriching cultural programming,  celebrating the Island of Hawaii’s cherished connection to the land and the sea.

“Regulars of this amazing hotel are said to include George Clooney, the Obama’s, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matthew McCounaghey, to name a few”

Launched in conjunction with World Reef Day, and allowing guests to become at one with Hawaii’s moana (the sea), Reef Protection and Spearfishing Lessons are now being offered to guests. Alongside Mauna Lani’s Kainalu Pros, guests can learn the traditional ways of spearfishing – a centuries-old hunting practice using a speargun and sling. With Hawaii home to invasive fish species such as the Roi (Peacock Grouper) and the To’au (Blacktail Snapper), the experience is leveraged for coral reef protection and the removal of such predators lends well to the health of the reef ecosystem. To complete the experience, guests are invited to compost their catch to support Mauna Lani’s community garden growth.

A Blooming Good Time at Hampton!

With Hampton Court Garden Festival being back to its former self this year, RHS has once again done a tremendous job drawing in the crowds and displaying the most beautiful entries for 2022.

Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2022

For keen gardeners and admirers alike, RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival is always a must-visit for the summer diary. And being the first year where numbers were permitted to be back to normal, post Covid, this popular show didn’t fail to impress.

Numbers were up, the sun shone throughout the week, and the garden displays, although up to their usual high standard, also incorporated subjects currently close to most people’s hearts, from sustainability, to environmental challenges to the Ukraine war.

Gardeners World presenter, Sue Kent, unveiled her entry for this years show. Providing a little haven of scented roses and wild flowers, this garden display was exquisite with it shades of pastels while being comfortable, not too uniformed. The queues to view it, proved it was a most popular choice by the public!

“Gardeners World presenter, Sue Kent, unveiled her entry for this years show,”

The Flower Marquee was abound with some extraordinary plants and flowers. Some of the succulents had been growing for over 80 years (see below centre cactus!)

The ’80 year old’ cactus

But outside, the wild flower meadow trend was certainly reflected in many of the entries. This popular move towards a ‘wilder’ approach and look for a garden, was originally started by HRH Prince Charles at Highgrove in 1982 in his own meadow. He had a vision to help many plant, flower and insect species, while also creating a beautiful vision for a garden of any size. Fast forward to now and see the displays at Hampton Court, and we are clearly following in his Royal footsteps!

This years show, felt like a celebration of life at last getting back to normal, with possibly more keen gardeners than ever…and with the sun even coming out to help celebrate, it was a beautiful week.

Healing Gardens

RHS partners with the NHS to create a Healing Garden for London hospital

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has teamed up with the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS trust at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) to create a green space where staff and patients can reflect and recharge.

Following a request to the gardening charity’s nationwide Healing Gardens programme in 2020 from Maria Leong, an anaesthetist registrar at the hospital, work is now underway following consultations with all those that will benefit from the space.

Designed by award-winning landscape designer Adam Frost, the garden makes use of existing but under-utilised outdoor space and will feature a wellbeing walk along Ravensbourne River, vibrant wildflower banks and a working garden where people can get involved and grow their gardening skills.

The path through the garden follows the flowing shape of the river, leading to a small woodland, and there will be plenty of outdoor seating as well as sheltered areas to enjoy the calm of the garden in all weather.

Plants have been chosen for their ability to delight the senses, such as soft ferns, scented Mediterranean favourites and bright additions such as wild daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus), spindle (Euonymus europaeus) and roses that will provide seasonal colour throughout the year.

Community groups and NHS staff put in the first plants in June, with the finishing touches being put into sections of the garden this autumn.

As part of the project, the RHS has worked with the local community and NHS staff to engage and train more than 200 local volunteers, so they can improve their skills and ensure the garden is well cared for in the future. The Lewisham Healing Garden will provide the blueprint for further gardens built as part of the Healing Gardens programme at hospitals around the UK.

Maria Leong, the UHL anaesthetist registrar who initiated the garden, said: “We are all really looking forward to the welcome boost the Healing Garden will provide staff, patients and the local community when it opens later this year. We’re delighted that our previously overlooked green space will be able to provide a range of benefits that will become part and parcel of our offering to patients and their visitors.”

The new garden at University Hospital Lewisham is the first in a series of regional ‘Healing Gardens’ to be created by the RHS, forming what will be a space for staff, patients and the community alike to join together and connect with nature,”

Adam Frost, designer of the Healing Garden, added: “I was so pleased to be able to design the Healing Garden in Lewisham as a way to show support for the tireless work of our NHS staff. The garden is an inclusive space that will provide that all-important connection to plants and gardens and support the mental, physical and social health of the local community.”

Escapism at the Eastbury Hotel and Spa

If immersing yourself in the great English countryside is what you’re looking for in a mini break, look no further than The Eastbury, says Verity Craig

Set away from the hustle and bustle, as you arrive in to North West Dorset at the picturesque town of Sherborne (6 miles east of Yeovil), a feeling of nostalgia may wash over you. For this typically English part of the world, in many ways appears to have stood still in time (but immaculately so!) With quaint shops, its’ narrow streets and sandy coloured Sherborne stone-bricked cottages, it’s no wonder it is known as one of the most beautiful market towns in England.

Positioned just off the main centre of Sherborne, and a 2-minute’s walk from the magnificent Abbey, is The Eastbury Spa and Hotel. Independently owned by Peter De Savary, this is one of 35 Hotel/Resort/Hospitality projects that the De Savary Group own, including 7 new championship golf courses and 3 marinas. The hotels range from five star boutique up to 550 guest rooms. Lana de Savary, Peter de Savary’s wife, assists with all the UK properties, whilst Peter de Savary particularly concentrates on all the overseas properties.

The couple’s hands-on approach certainly shows. The shabby-chic and artistically designed interior décor, and ingenious ideas (such as The Potting Shed Rooms), can only be that of an independently-owned hotel.

Upon our visit, my husband and I were booked for our evening meal at Seasons, the hotel’s 2AA Rosette fine dining restaurant. Set overlooking the beautifully manicured cottage-style garden, Seasons owns an extensive menu offering a good selection of locally-sourced ingredients. To start, I opted for the Devon crab with cucumber and horseradish, grapefruit and dill. It was the perfect refreshing accompaniment to go with my Cosmopolitan aperitif. My husband opted for, and enjoyed, the Carpaccio of octopus with pink ginger, a ponzu dressing and wasabi mayonnaise…alongside his Whisky Sour aperitif.

As we sat in the window, enjoying the live pianist playing nearby, and looking at the pretty garden; we started to fully unwind. The restaurant team were friendly and polite, wanting to cater to our every need (helping us unwind from our busy lives even more.)

Upon our mains arriving, we were once again grateful for the choices we had made. I had selected the cheese soufflé (an old favourite of mine from when The Sussex Arts Club used to make a superb one some years ago, as does The Marbella Club in Spain!) Sometimes, when you try one of your favourites elsewhere though, you can be disappointed; I am pleased to report that on this occasion I was not. It was most enjoyable! Meanwhile, my husband enjoyed the 28-day matured ribeye steak, cooked (according to him) to ‘perfection.’

After dinner, there are lots of activities to enjoy; from snooker in one lounge, to the large chess on a table in the garden, to croquet (if it’s still light enough.) As it was a bit cold, and a family had already beaten us to the snooker room, we opted for the lounge where we finished our Malbec wine and read some lovely glossy magazines on the comfy sofa.

We were booked in to one of the ingenious Potting Shed Rooms, just a short walk down the path through the walled garden. Complete with a modern wet room, terrace, and kitchenette, we would have been happy to have stayed here a lot longer than our work commitments allowed.

Just like the interior of the main house, which dates back to the 17th Century, The Potting Sheds ooze charm and character. We were in ‘The Rosemary shed,’ almost opposite the uniquely designed spa pod building (pictured left), and external hot tub.

There’s lots of lovely walks in and around Sherborne (and dogs are also welcome for a sleepover at The Eastbury Hotel!) We walked through the small streets over to the impressive Sherborne Abbey and then enjoyed a drink in The Plume of Feathers’ pretty beer garden before making our way back to our cosy abode for the night.

Sherborne Abbey

This charming hotel, set in an exquisite small town, is one that definitely deserves to be added to your must-visit lists for staycation breaks.

Add Some Muscle!

Health & fitness expert, Josephine Christie, explains the fundamentals for knowing how to build muscle

Building muscle is a fundamental goal for many people today. Many people spend hours in the gym to increase muscle mass and look better. However, a significant majority of these people do not get the results they want and experience great disappointment.

“The thing that will increase your muscle-building speed is actually gaining weight,”

So, why can’t someone who does sports regularly gain muscle? Some simple reasons lead to this situation. The most common mistake is not to apply the ‘progressive overload’ principle. If you’ve been going to the gym for months and working with the same weight, there’s a big problem. Muscles don’t want to grow unless they are forced. Because more muscle, means more energy for the human body. That’s why your muscle mass decreases rapidly when you stop exercising.

The principle of progressive overload is the basis of muscle building. To apply this principle most correctly, increase the weights you use every week. If you cannot increase the weights, increase the number of repetitions. If you cannot do this, shorten the rest period. All this combined alone, will cause your muscles to strain more, and you will gain muscle quickly.

“So, why can’t someone who does sports regularly gain muscle?”

Another important rule you should follow to build muscle, is to eat protein. According to studies, someone who wants to build muscle should eat at least 1.6 times their body weight in grams of protein every day. Otherwise, even if you exercise regularly, you will not build muscle, and the hours you spend in the gym will mean little.

If you follow the principle of progressive overload and eat properly, your muscle mass will increase over time.

But there is one last thing you need to know to increase your muscle mass much faster. In addition to all of this, the thing that will increase your muscle-building speed is actually gaining weight. But you have to be careful. Gaining weight too fast, can cause you to get fat. For this reason, you should gain an average of 1.5 – 2kg each month.

“Someone who wants to build muscle should eat at least 1.6 times their body weight in grams of protein every day. Otherwise, even if you exercise regularly, you will not build muscle,”

So now you have all the basics you need to know about building muscle. It’s actually quite simple. If you follow everything mentioned above, you should build muscle. However, don’t forget that you need to apply these principles consistently over time to build muscle. Eating protein regularly every day, going to the gym regularly, and increasing your weight may not be an easy-quick-fix. But it is the correct and healthiest way, and will definitely be worth it!

We take a look at Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection in Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula

An Exquisite Setting

Floating over a protected forest of mangroves on one of the Yucatan Peninsula’s most beautiful white sand beaches, Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection opened in late December on nine pristine oceanfront acres within the landmark Kanai destination. Set in a region steeped in the lore and wisdom of the ancient Mayans, the resort is a sublime contemporary embodiment of the Mayan belief that renewal stems from active exploration of the elements in pursuit of positive change and more conscious living. Offering an immediate connection with the soul of this timeless and breathtaking retreat, Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection draws its name from the Spanish word for ‘ethereal’ and offers a celestial guest experience through its breathtaking beaches, awe-inspiring and unspoiled natural surroundings, extraordinary cuisine and curated experiences deep rooted in ancient Mayan practices and rituals to facilitate rejuvenation.

The beautiful beach setting at Etereo

A Rarefied World Apart, Balanced Between Sea and Sky

Just 40 minutes by car south of Cancun International Airport, Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection is as removed from everyday life as heaven from earth. Poised above the mangroves that have thrived on this shoreline since time immemorial, almost every area of the resort offers all-encompassing ocean views. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into the gallery-esque reception area, an artfully curated collection of gathering spaces, and the realm of Sana, the resort’s spa and wellness center.

“Just steps from the beach are the resort’s five restaurants, two swimming pools, events lawn and kids’ club,”

Ensconced in the jungle just off the shore, 75 dramatic ocean-front guest accommodations offer consummate peace and privacy. Ranging from Studios to three-bedroom Penthouse Suites, all offering private terraces with views of the sea and beyond. Floor to ceiling glass doors create a seamless transition between indoors and out, and private plunge pools, hot tubs, and sky-deck roof terraces – ideal for sunbathing, private dining, and stargazing – invite relaxation immersed in nature.

A seemingly endless stretch of brilliant white sand lapped by the turquoise bay, the beach at Etéreo is one of the resort’s finest amenities, revealing the world’s second largest reef just 250-feet from shore. Just steps from the beach are the resort’s five restaurants, two swimming pools, events lawn and kids’ club where guests will revel in life’s joys: savouring delicious meals, immersing sun-warmed skin in blissfully cool water, and celebrating moments – both the significant and the beautifully mundane – with family and friends.

A Nature-Cradled Portal into Mexico’s Contemporary Art Scene

Inspired by the region’s lush beauty, cultural heritage, and balmy climate, every space within Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection has been curated by Migdal Arquitectos (architecture, design) and Meyer Davis (interiors). Inspired by nature,  raw materials such as lava stone, copper, and indigenous tzalam wood, while custom-designed furnishings and textiles by local artisans are set against a backdrop of artworks by the late celebrated Mexican artist Manuel Felguérez.

Felguérez’s sculptural lattice screens in wood and architectural plaster feature throughout the resort, creating a delicate, constantly changing interplay of light and shadow. There are also custom rugs by Daniel Valero, focal pieces in the spa by Guatemala’s Agnes Studio, and outdoor dining tables handcrafted by Puebla’s Bandido Studio. Striking contemporary art installations include a hanging woven rope sculpture by Marcela Diaz and a monumental, steel and glass sculpture by Hector Esrawe. Works by Charabati Bizarri, Tapiz, Peter Glassford, and Tere Metta adorn the walls, adding yet another joyful layer to the visual feast laid on by the resort.

The resort’s experiences program has been designed to achieve this by celebrating the vibrancy of Mexico and its storied culture.

Guests can do all that they anticipate – exploring the Yucatan’s natural wonders and historic Mayan ruins, swimming in the crystal waters of cenotes, snorkeling vivid reefs, hiking, biking, horse-riding, and diving into Mexico’s epicurean scene with chocolate, mezcal, and wine tastings. But they can also experience adventures and moments offered nowhere else.

Inspired by the notions of honoring the past, living in the present, and creating the future, exclusive Etéreo experiences include painting wooden Alebrije spirit animals; taking part in a Mayan fireside blessing or Equinox Ceremony; tuning in to the sounds of the Yucatan with a local musician; learning local card games and handicrafts; uncovering lesser-known Mexican flavors with home-cooked Nicho de Abuela pop-up dinners; and planting saplings in the mangrove forest – to name just a few.

Interactive experiences are also offered through the resort’s vibrant Carolina K Boutique, which epitomizes the Etéreo connection with community and culture by serving as a creative hub for local artisans. Dressing Up In The Queen’s Jewels

To coincide with Jubilee year, Livia Primo Lack looks at how you can recreate Her Royal Highnesses top five timeless pieces

Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II is Britain’s longest reigning monarch to date. Her extraordinary devotion, sense of service and patronage to Great Britain and the Commonwealth over the last 70 years has been one full of historic charitable and professional events that the public has followed closely through the pages of newspapers, magazines and televised programming.

HRH Queen Elizabeth on Coronation Day, 2nd June 1953

A constant in each of these settings, from military services to family gatherings, has been her exquisite collection of jewellery pieces that she pairs effortlessly with her uniquely personal style. From brooches to pearl necklaces, here are ‘the top 5 timeless jewellery’ looks that HRH has gracefully donned over the years, and the best pieces to invest in to recreate them for ourselves at home.

  • The Lover’s Knot Brooch

Inherited by Queen Elizabeth from Queen Mary in 1953, this diamond brooch acquired from Garrard in 1932 is a staple piece in HRH’s collection, consistently making an appearance throughout her reign. One can recreate this elegant look with a simple diamond bow brooch from a brand such as Van Cleef & Arpels

  • The Victorian Suite of Sapphire and Diamond Set

The stunning sapphire set composed of earrings, a pendant and a necklace was made in 1850 and gifted to Queen Elizabeth by her father, King George VI, for her wedding. Our particular favourites are the teardrop sapphire and diamond earrings. These Sapphire and diamond earrings (below) from Garrard are the perfect pair to do this look justice.

  • Queen Mary’s ruby cluster earrings

In 1926, King George V gave these ruby and diamond earrings to his wife and jewellery connoisseur Queen Mary on the occasion of her 59th birthday. Inheriting them from her ancestors, Queen Elizabeth has worn these cluster earrings regularly since they were gifted to her. For similar ruby earrings with an updated modern twist, try these exquisite Suzanne Kalan studs (below).

  • The Butterfly Brooch

This beautiful butterfly brooch was gifted to Queen Elizabeth on the occasion of her wedding to Prince Philip in 1947 by her dear friend the Countess of Onslow. The Queen was last seen wearing it during a virtual audience with ambassadors at COP26. For a more minimalist everyday look, these rose gold and ruby butterfly earrings by Pragnell (below) embody the elegant spirit of the butterflies.

  • Three-strand pearl necklace

What is a jewellery box without a string of pearls? A collection is not complete without a string of pearls and this holds true for the Queen’s collection as well. Another gift from her father, this perfect pearl string set is by far one of the Queen’s most favoured and worn pieces. Keeping the three-strand pearl form, the Tasaki Comet necklace (below) honours this classic pearl necklace and gives it an added edge and sense of flair with a diamond star motif.
